but WHICH Government?
6 10 2004List this under “interesting”…
I don’t know how many of you have seen that late-night infomercial pushing the “Government Issue Silver Dollar Coin” commemorating the World Trade Center. I’ve always been upset that this was the starting pistol for a whole host of September 11th Crap ‘N Stuff. It used to be taboo to make a profit from this tragic event. Three years have passed, so it seems that just enough healing has happened that we can whore the event for capital gain.
(By the way, I keep having to re-write my sentences in order to avoid the “Make A Buck” pun inherent with the Silver Dollar product)
It’s come to my attention through another Blog entry that this coin - while still considered “Government Issue” - isn’t actually produced by the American Government. Instead, it’s produced by The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands . “What’s CNMI” you say?
I looked it up and it’s a small collection of Islands somewhere near Japan. They weren’t even one of the ‘Coalition of the Willing’ (side note - that still has to be the stupidest name for an Organisation of countries ever).
I don’t want to say anything negative about the country (or collection of islands… whatever), nor do I want to assume that they had immunity to the negative effects of September 11th. However, their ‘Government Issued Coin’ just makes them seem greedy, insensitive, and opportunistic…
…it all seems kind of American to me.
