First new Wing Commander production since that crappy movie with those lame Kilrathi, and THIS IS ALL THEY CAN DO WITH THE LICENCE?!?

Some crappy port of WC5: Prophecy to the Game Boy Advance.

What a waste of time.

I still haven’t forgiven Chris Roberts for selling out and letting the the movie be turned into just another teeny-bopper flick.

When will people learn that selling out doesn’t always make more money? By alienating a loyal 10 year fan base, they managed to spend $30 million making a movie that pulled in $11 million, and effectively killed the franchise.

When I see the most recent (5 years old) PC game of Wing Commander on Game Boy Advance, it concerns me. Even if the game becomes a roaring success and more games are produced, they’re likely to be made for the GBA… not the PC.

Dammit. I wanna kill some Kilrathi.

Holly’s Law” doesn’t fix the problem.

While it’s considered likely that one of the current sex offenders in the neighbourhood is the culprit, it has yet to be proven.

The proposed “Holly’s Law” does NOTHING to add to Social Services (Family Therapy, etc.), and instead only solves the problem after the fact.

With every sex offender, there is a first victim. I do not see how signing the petition will help prevent such atrocities in the future. Money has been taken out of prevention (like Family Therapy), and put into punishment and post-incident therapy (like the Penetanguishene super-jail and Women’s Shelters). Because there are no numbers to prove how many have been coached to deal with their problems without resorting to such severe action, people would rather see money put into jails… something with hard numbers.

Those organizing “Holly’s Law” have a powerful voice in the GTA, Ontario, and to some degree, Canada. It is essential that they reflect on prevention of first victims, as much if not more than subsequent ones.

I respect them for their efforts, but I can not sign the petition until I believe in it - and I am asking the same of you.

This is not a popular opinion, but I believe that it is a sane one. I also believe it to be more sober than what is currently outlined in “Holly’s Law”.

The Jays are playing .500 baseball again. They might have a chance to win, place or show in this years lineup. That would be nice, but not what I’m writing about right now.

Simone and I saw “Matrix Reloaded” on the Thursday night that it opened. The format was sort of what I expected it to be: Lots of speeches and neo-philosophy (pun intended) interspersed with jaw-dropping fight scenes blending traditional Eastern wire–based acrobatics with modern high-budget CG.

Going in with that expectation, I was not disappointed. And even the stuff that I knew about made me gasp as I watched it executed on the screen in front of me and in the room around me.

(Quick note: When you go, stay until after the credits have run… about 10 minutes. There is a one minute teaser of the third movie, “Matrix Revolutions”.)

That’s not what I’m going to write about here.

Two Monday’s ago, the car was showing definite signs that it needs serious work done. The brakes are weak in emergency-braking situations, there’s a nail in one tire that needs to be patched, and the “Check Engine” light turns on as the engine is warming up. After getting a surprising tax return resulting from some unused tuition tax credits, I had to make a decision what to do with the money I now had.

I could either spend $1000-1500 fixing up the old Escort, and wait around until the next thing goes, or just use the money in buying a new (used) car. I decided on the latter.

What I was looking for was a late-90’s Ford Escort ZX2 (the sport coupe model) with under 100,000K, automatic, A/C and either a tape-deck or CD player. Toronto radio stations - while plentiful - usually suck balls when it comes to content.

All things considered, it went really fast. Over the weekend I made the decision, on Monday I saw only a couple of cars I was interested in on AutoTrader’s site. On Wednesday, Simone and I drove to Kitchener to look at the best looking car I could find in the listings. The dealership is located across the road from RegNSara’s, so we went out to dinner with them.

I bought the car then and there. They kept it for a couple of days to buff out some scratches and give it one last check before delivering it to me. Much of Thursday afternoon was shopping around for Insurance, and once finding that best-rate, signing up.

Friday night, they drove the car out from Kitchener in order to deliver it to me. We finalized the paperwork, and the car is now mine. I still have to take it back to Kitchener for a weekday in order to get the CD player installed (they didn’t have all the parts needed, and I wanted to get my hands on my new Sweet Ride).

It’s been a busy week, but I’ve already put over 600 km on it since Friday. Another topic to note is how much I did on the Internet in order to speed up the process.

All research on which car I should choose came from Internet web sites, as did looking up dealers with cars that I wanted, checking the dealer with the Better Business Bureau, finding Insurance quotes, and checking the ratings for different Insurance companies.

I even had the option of buying the car directly through the dealer’s web site and having it delivered to my front door! However, as much of a geek as I am, I wasn’t going to go that far. I think the most expensive thing I’ve bought online would have to be a $250 hard drive from Future Shop…. and second to that would be the Samurai Pizza Cats Pizza Parlor Playset that I got on eBay for around $80.

So that’s it. I’ve got a new car.

1999 Ford Escort ZX2 (2-door coupe)

2.0L DOHC Zetec 4-cylinder engine

130 HP @ 5750 rpm

4 speed automatic

26 mpg city / 33 mpg highway

Dark Green exterior, kind of a charcoal black interior.

…oh, and I have considered moving Murdoch into my new Sweet Ride.

NEW SHOES!

Not only did I go into a mall last night (a phobia that’s progressively gotten worse since moving to the GTA), but I got a good deal on new shoes at Payless.

I was planning to pick up one new pair of sneakers around $50-60 that look nice and sleak enough to wear in the work environment. However, there was nothing in Payless’ limited selection that worked for me. While I tried on a few pairs, Simone tried on some sexy high-heels and found a cute pair of kids sandles with “Finding Nemo” on it and LEDs under the heels so that everytime the toddler takes a step, it lights up.

Finally, I bought a pair of leather(ish), comfortable shoes (size 10 wide! My size!) that look really good for the work environment or other semi-formal situations, and picked up a pair of cheap sneakers whut-for to do my walking in. They’re comfortable, but not the MOST comfortable shoes I’ve ever bought. However, they have support in the right places for my feet.

The total for both shoes, after taxes, came out just short of $60. Not bad, considering I buy shoes once a year or two, and the last pair of sneakers I bought was around $50 and barely lasted one year.

In other news, there’s nothing new in the theatres that I’m interested in seeing until Matrix Reloaded comes out. I’ll probably stay inside Saturday and work on a few projects I’ve been wanting to get done, including Simmie’s portfolio site. There’s also a few movies I’ve found on some old VHS tapes that I’ve picked up from cable over the last year or two (I found one tape with early-season-1 episodes of ‘24′). I’ll probably have them on in the background, dig a hole in my apartment and not come out until Mother’s Day dinner Sunday night.

I’ll be on my email, if anyone wants me!

Oh, wait. Simone and I might be going to the Rheostatics Saturday night, but we have to get tix first. I’ve been open to concert-going more since I realized that rock concerts for Simmie is like going to the movies for me. However, good concerts don’t come along too often - so I can see why she loves to go when she has the chance. (In other news, I just passed 130 MovieWatcher points, indicating around 65 movies that I’ve been to in the last four years… not counting non-AMC theatres)

I still don’t quite find arena-style concerts that appealing. Kool Haus or Phoenix club-style concerts are a lot better IMHO. Luckily, most of the concerts I’m interested in for this Summer are in this format… and I don’t feel like paying seventy-five bucks a seat to get the peripheral view of the upcoming REM concert.
