The weekend came and passed and - like the previous four weekends - I could be found moving furniture. The move from 401 to Major Mac wasn’t the end of my pain. My Mom has come up with a few bright ideas that have only served to bring me pain.
First, my newly-retired mother wants to redecorate the entire house… starting with my room. Something about the hideous faux-finish that I painted and how abusive it is to the eye. Her demand was that I spend a few hours going through my old dresser, closet and shelves to get rid of any old, useless stuff. Basically, erase the last 20 years of my life out of that room and either move it to Toronto or throw it out.
To be entirely fair, she’s not burning books or anything - but from my standpoint, it is starting to take on certain Third Reich properties.
So after moving old stuff out of my room (I managed to collect a lot of crap in the last 25 years) my Mom’s second great idea was to move John & Seiko’s stuff out of storage.
They’ve been living in Japan for over a year and a lot of their furniture, boxes, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera were being stored for about a hundred bucks a month. Figuring that they have a big home, my loving mother decided that it could be stored there now that I’m borrowing babysitting a lot of their big stuff in my new apartment (eg. chesterfield, various shelves, microwave, TV, stereo).
Boxes have been moved and dust has been lifted directly into my sinuses for the last four weeks. Finally, we had to move a full-sized hide-a-bed up from the basement and - along with a couple of trips to the city dump - we managed to clean out the basement enough to store the multitude of leftovers from John, Seiko and Dean’s move across the planet.
Now my calves hurt. That’s a good sign that I was using my legs more than my back, but there’s only a few moments of self-gratification at my skilled moving abilities before I stand up for another cup of coffee and the shocks of pain force a tear from my eye.
I am not moving anything next weekend.
I am eating turkey and watching TV. Nothing more.
